We started planning the purchase of a heat pump a few years ago. Unfortunately, this technology requires a lot of electricity!
As we live on the North Sea coast directly behind the dyke, we thought we could use the 24/7 wind to generate electricity*1. I am an engineer and hobby pilot and know a lot about mechanical engineering, electrics and aerodynamics and enjoy developing! So we started working on and testing small wind turbines. Unfortunately, we had to learn very quickly that a lot of fraud is being committed with a technology that is relatively unknown to the general public. In other words, lies and deception are unfortunately commonplace. Information on performance is pulled by the hair, statements on noise and vibrations are embellished and the quality of the products is absolutely unsuitable for long-term operation. In addition, many suppliers/manufacturers deliberately omit technical data so that they cannot be held liable, as missing values cannot be verified!
After 2 years of testing countless models, designs, sizes and accessories, we finally came across a (formerly Danish) manufacturer whose products deliver what the manufacturer promised in their full technical specifications in terms of performance and noise. However, in an autumn storm with gusts of approx. 150km/h, the test product came apart! As we were convinced of the basic performance of the 3kW small wind turbine in the test, we worked with the manufacturer to determine the cause of the failure and used these findings to revise the mechanics of the series. The tested continuous load capacity now exceeds wind force 12 and gusts of over 150 km/h!
By the way: Other manufacturers (including German ones) had similar problems during the storm, but as far as we know they didn’t change anything!
This flexibility of our wind turbine supplier and the fact that all products come with full documentation including power curves (from cut-in to peak power), expected annual output (according to Rayleigh), wind speed-dependent noise curves and drawings of the mast and concrete foundation (with associated free structural analysis) have convinced us to sell these horizontal and vertical products here.
